Dan Cameron’s NFL Draft Predictions

The NFL Draft 2017 is now upon us and our resident draft expert and OC Dan Cameron has given us his thoughts on what may or may not happen during tonight’s events. It is sure to be an exciting day in Philadelphia with each and every war room looking to come out on top. The NFL Draft is live on Sky Sports 2 at 1am Friday.

1.

NEEDS:  QB / DL

PICK: DE – MYLES GARRET – TEXAS A&M

The consensus number 1 pick.  He runs funny but on the field he is a missile to the QB. Relatively clean but in his last 2 seasons only 9 of his 21 sacks came against SEC Tackles but an undeniable number 1 prospect.

2.

NEEDS:  QB / LB

PICK: DL – SOLOMON THOMAS – STANFORD

They picked up Brian Hoyer to give some breathing space but no QB in this draft is worth the number 2 pick. New GM and New coach but both have links to Mike Shanahan and I doubt they will go for QB but bolster the Defence with a disruptive monster that will bookend last years pick DeForrest Buckner.

3.

NEEDS: CB / S

PICK: S – JAMAL ADAMS – LSU

John Fox has a year to save his job but one pick wont cure the Bears ills. Mike Glennon has been signed from a backup spot in Tampa Bay to refresh the position after having to live with Jake Cutler  throwing interceptions for fun.  Adams is over taking Hooker as the top Safety and both of them outrank the CBs available. He brings a physicality back to the secondary that’s been missing for some time.

4.

NEEDS: TE  / RB

PICK: RB – LEONARD FOURNETTE – LSU

Back to back LSU team mates go of the board and at the spot that Zeke Elliot was taken by the Cowboys that added a dimension to the Boys offence that had been missing. Similarly the Jags will look to do the same thing. Chris Ivory and TJ Yeldon were brought in via FA and the Draft to address the run game but neither seems to be the long term fix and with a game changing player available its pretty hard to turn down the beast from the bayou. The defence was address heavily on FA and so expect this pick and help on the offensive line early in the second round

5.

NEEDS: CB / WR

PICK: CB – MARSHON LATTIMORE – OHIO STATE

With 2 picks the Titans have options. Too high for a Wide out but also perhaps too high for them to select at a position they can address a little lower the fifth pick is ripe for a trade. But if they sit they need a corner after McCourtney was released and Lattimore comes from a program that has dispensed good DB stock in the last few years.  This is where the draft will start to get its own character depending on what happens here.

6.

NEEDS:  QB / DB

PICK: DL – JOHNATHAN ALLEN – ALABAMA

He’s sliding a bit for reasons that escape me but one of the most explosive Defensive Lineman in College the last 2 years is still available. Muhammed Wilkerson is being  a pain in the jets and for a defensive minded coach it will be appealing to add some beef up from that can go pressure Tom Brady. But then again if the Jets reach for a QB it will probably end up like most of their recent 1st rounders  since 2010 that weren’t D-lineman.

7.

NEEDS: WR / DB

PICK: S – MALIK HOOKER – OHIO STATE

Receiver is a real possibility since Philip Rivers is ageing and Melvin Gordon started showing signs of why he was drafted in the first round after a rookie year to forget. They will take a QB later in the draft to start thinking about the future but the back end of the now second Los Angeles franchise (I’s almost forgotten) hasn’t been he same since Eric Weddle was allowed to leave. Malik Hooker gets Ed Reed comparisons but Ill make a slighter lesser comparison of Malcolm Jenkins another first round Safety from Ohio State.

8.

NEEDS: RB / OL

PICK: RB – DALVIN COOK

The run game in Carolina was poor poor poor in 2016, the line was mostly responsible but Johnathn Stewart is old and Fozzy Whittiker will not be the featured back. Cook is a Devonta Freeman Clone coming out of Florida State and his dynamic play will be attractive to those wanting the Panthers to regain the ascendancy in the NFC South.

9.

NEEDS: LB / DL

PICK:  DL – HASSAN REDDICK – TEMPLE

Undersized but full of punch and energy the Temple Product who will be right at home in Philadelphia on draft night fits what the Bengals and Marvin Lewis like to do on defence. They lost Andrew Whitworth but this is too high for Offensive Lineman help and need fits best(ish) available for the stripey kittycats.

10.

NEEDS: QB / CB

PICK: QB – MITCHELL TRUBISKY – NORTH CAROLINA

The bills have been quiet this draft season. Too quiet. GM Doug Whaley is on thin ice, and drafting a young ‘franchise’ Quarterback might buy him some time. Its no secret that Whaley is not a fan of Tyrod Taylor and the franchise does need a stable long term player under centre, the likes of which they have not had since Jim Kelly. 13 starts and unable to get ahead of Marquise Williams in his Junior year (a player that wasn’t even drafted) will be red flags for some teams but his Senior year play, school records and workouts will make a coach/GM believe he is a talent that can resurrect a franchise, but he could be considered Jared Goff lite.

11.

NEEDS: CB / S

PICK: TE – OJ HOWARD – ALABAMA

The 2015 National Championship Offensive Player of the Game is a specimen that teams needing a gamechange on offensive will be monitoring the longer he stays on the board. Big, Strong and an actual help in the run game, the Crimson Tide product can replace Jimmy Graham since the inexplicable reason to trade him left them with a FA signing of Colby Fleener. No offensive to Fleener but he inst the new guy or the old guy. The saints have 2 picks in the first and with the signing of Adrian Peterson to a paltry contract they can go either side with either pick. The Malcolm Bulter trade that’s been about for months (and a contract already agreed pending a trade agreement) could still happen with pick 32. but then there’s the question to why it wasn’t included in the Brandon Cooks trade…..

12.

NEEDS: QB / DL

PICK: QB – DESHAUN WATSON – CLEMSON

Some say Mitch Trubisky is the target but to me the Browns will take either. The plan should they land either however will be to play Brock Osweiler who was unceremoniously dumped after a year from signing the big contract with the Texans. He can play for a year, try to rebuild his reputation then engineer a trade out. All the while Watson can sit and get more comfortable with the Pro game, a natural leader who went to back to back National Championship games (only 3 losses in college career) and torched a Bama Secondary in BOTH games leads me to say he should be the top QB taken.

13.

NEEDS: LB / QB

PICK: WR – MIKE WILLIAMS – CLEMSON

I want him to fall 3 more spots to Baltimore but the Cards just saw who they wanted snatched in front of them (so keep an eye out for trade action between them and the Saints) but if it falls this way Mike Williams allows them to take the number one wideout and put in place Larry F’s successor and start right away given Michael Floyd was released half way through last season for a DUI and a lack of productions. Big and Physical he will assist Carson Palmer in his farewell tour (he sold his house in Arizona, I think its clear that this is both he and Fitz’s last year).

14.

NEEDS: CB / RB

PICK: RB – CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY – STANFORD

In my drafts I was convinced that I had overvalued and put him to the Raiders at pick 24. But the Eagles drafted a passer that last year showed promise but had a lack of targets in the field overall. McCaffrey allows the Eagles to add a dimension to their offence that will allow their fledgling QB Wentz to succeed and he fits into so many packages that I at one point thought he would be perfect for the Saints and Sean Payton. He is explosive and will bring points to whoever drafts him but the home town draft night team takes one of the most interesting prospects for an offensive mind for some time

15.

NEEDS: OL /  DL

PICK: DE – DERRICK BARNETT – TENNESSEE

He doesn’t test well but he plays well in the (arguably) best division in college football, and had more sacks against SEC competition than Myles Garrett. The Colts got rid of a really bad egg in GM Ryan Grigson and replaced him with Chris Ballard the former Kansas City Chiefs personnel man who has a defensive background. That combined with the fact that while I said he didn’t teat well he has the same numbers as Terrell Suggs and HC Chuck Pagano was the man to bring through said Suggs Barnett makes sense here.

16.

NEEDS: LB / WR

PICK: LB – REUBEN FOSTER – ALABAMA

I promised my self I wouldn’t put too much of a personal touch on this pick but for the sake of clarity: I hate Joe Flacco. He has killed this franchise.

Now that I have gotten that out the way, Courtney Upshaw left a season ago and there is now the opportunity to replace a Bama product with a Bama product that blows Upshaw out the water. Watch his tape and he flies to the football. Yeah he is mental, we know he got kicked out the scouting combine, we know he had a dilute sample which is as good as a positive test according to ‘experts’ but god damn this guy can run from sideline to sideline and mop up and offensive ball carrier.

Secondary option is Wideout but Foster is a day one starter if you can look past the black spots, and they should, because you know Ray Lewis will be moving in with him if he is the pick.

17.

NEEDS: CB / WR

PICK: WR – JOHN ROSS – WASHINGTON

Washington get a man from Washington. They took Josh Doctson last year but he’s been injured, they have lost Desean Jackson and Pierre Garcon to FA and only brought in Terrelle Pryor.  A weapon to stretch the field and get very, very, very vertical Ross will be irritable to an offensive minded coach like Jay Gruden. We know he ran 4.22 secs at Indy during the combine but more importantly it shows up on his film. He is a dynamic play maker and there is very little point paying Kirk Cousins a Franchise Tag amount and not give him anyone to throw too.

18.

NEEDS:CB / WR

PICK: WR – COREY DAVIS – WESTERN MICHIGAN

The over under on first round wideouts is 3.5 and the third and most likely final WR comes right after the second. I think Davis can be the best WR in this draft but his draft position suffers from smaller school syndrome and  will fall as a result. They address CB at 5 and now are able to give Mariota a weapon that will ease the 8 man box that the titans saw so often last year due to an efficient run game headed by DeMarco Murray.

19.

NEEDS: OL / S

PICK: TE  – DAVID NJOKU – MIAMI

Not an obvious need as Cameron Brate is serviceable, Doug Martin will do for another year and the recruitment of Desean Jackson opposite Mike Evans give the Bucs enough on offence to be…. comfortable. But Njoku would be a definite upgrade and his ability to run after the catch and general athleticism would give HC Dirk Koetter a player he hasn’t had the pleasure of using since having hall of Fame TE Tony Gonzalez at his disposal.

20.

NEEDS: OL / DL

PICK:  RYAN RAMCZYK

This is the point were its going to start becoming attractive for those who have an interest in the remaining QBS to start trying to move up. That said a Tackle is needed in Mile High and the Badger from Wisconsin bring the physical traits you’d expect from a Madison product and with a 1st round QB in the wings waiting to take over for Trevor Siemian who isn’t the long term answer this is the area where an Offensive Lineman pick can become viable.

21.

NEEDS: DL /LB

PICK: DL – TAK MCKINLEY – UCLA

The Lions showed  that there is life after Megatron last year. A uprising record (to me) they gave their HC Jim Caldwell new life and perhaps another couple of years to get Matthew Stafford further into the playoffs than they have managed before.  But other than Ziggy Ansah they have little to no edge threat and at this point Mckinley is the best available. The Lions need to get at Aaron Rodger to win the division and without an upgrade or addition at Defensive end its unlikely the Lions will succeed in releasing the strangle hold of the PacKers when they meet, as always, twice this year.

22.

NEEDS: LB / CB

PICK: CB – MARLON HUMPHREY – OHIO STATE

After Xavien Howard the depth at corner gets pretty thin. The Ohio State product is productive and could easily be gone by this point due to his raw ability.

23.

NEEDS: OL / LB /

PICK: RB – ALVIN KAMARA – TENNESSEE

The Giants are on the cusp again of reaching the playoffs and with OBJ, Eli Manning and at running back they have …..no one. Petersons off the market and absent a trade Kamara who averaged over 5 yards a carry in the SEC is a slightly high but necessary pick.

24.

NEEDS: LB / DL

PICK: T – CAM ROBINSON – ALABAMA

Quite simply the best player available. Absent the injury to Derek Carr the Raider were on course for a deep run at the playoffs and in my view at least the AFC Championship game. Donald Penn is getting old and a  bit prone to holding penalties. Robinson brings a talented, athletic big body to the already very impressive Oakland / Las Vegas line.

25.

QB – PATRICK MAHOMES – TEXAS TECH

NEEDS: QB /  OL

Tom Savage is the future of the Texans under centre. Ok, so I was just making sure you were paying attention because even thought they talk a good game I don’t think anyone in the facility thinks that he is. But I really loathe to pick a Quarterback here but I must. Mahomes is a big armed machine who is more athletic than their previous man and O’Brien as he did with Osweiler will believe he mould this kid. But the fact he will have to start right away means he is wrong. I like O’Brien, but I don’t think he is a HC in the NFL.

26.

NEEDS: OL/DL

PICK: GARETT BOLLES

Seattle have struggled in the run since Okung left and last year started a player that hadn’t even played College football. Boles is athletic and not afraid to stick his nose in. not value but need.

27.

NEEDS: LB / DL

PICK: CB – TRADAVIOUS WHITE – LSU

If Gareon Conley wasn’t facing legal trouble at the time of writing he would be the pick, but the fact that Mahomes is gone, I don’t think any other team sees De’shone Kizer as worthy of a first round pick and they need corner help white fills a void and an eventual partner across from Marcus Peters.

28.

NEEDS: CB / S

PICK: DB – JABRIL PEPPERS – MICHIGAN

I have forced this one but I do think the diluted sample, 1 int in college career and consistent wearer  bad hats (big red flag) Peppers and the Cowboys are going to match each other at something during this draft. He may have been a Heisman finalist but he is not a height weight speed guy and his off field interviews and issues are forcing him lower and lower in the draft. He can play football but I don’t think teams are cutting him a lot of slack.

29.

NEEDS: CB / LB

PICK: LB – T.J. WATT – WISCONSIN

I dont think he is hanging off his brothers coattails but this might be a little high for Watt Jnr. He is a thick Clay Matthews and the Pack are moving Clay back to the outside so a player that can either fill the inside of a 3-4 or slim down and rush the opposite side of Matthew is a very viable pick.

30.

PICK: LB – RYAN ANDERSON – ALABAMA

NEEDS: LB / WR

They lost Lawrence Timmons, Ryan Shazier has never made it through a full season and James Harrison is 86 years old. But they have Bud Dupree, drafted Artie burns but realistically no one at that position makes sense from a value stand point. But they can reach a bit for a player that flies and was often either the first one or one after Reuben Foster to arrive at the ball for Alabama.

31.

NEEDS: OL / DL

PICK: OL – FORREST LAMP

Not much to upgrade on a team that was one quarter (or less and 25 point lead) other than their coaches awareness of situational football and clock management strategy……

But if they do decide to take a play and not trade for Tom Coughlin, Forrest Lamp funny name aside is a beast who will hunt out defensive players that in his mind derserve to be puunished.

32.

NEEDS: CB / S

PICK:  S – OBI MELIFONWU – UCONN

To finish a purely personal pick after seeing his tape on YouTube (scientific I know) which was a revelation. This kid moves in the back end as well as the top 2 safety but played against poor competition but he ran a 4.4 sec 40 and at  6’4 has the frame to be a Kam Chancellor.
