The Edinburgh Wolves Women Are Ready To Fight For Their Crown!
The Wolves Women go into this year’s Sapphire Series as the reining Northern Conference Champions. This season however, sees the team making the anticipated step up from Division 2’s 5 aside football to Division 1’s 7 aside football, fighting in the Northern Conference against East Kilbride Pirates, Leeds Carnegie Chargers and The Manchester Titans. The winners of this conference moving on to the National Championship against the winner of the Southern Conference.
The Edinburgh Women’s team have recruited well in the off-season, bringing in new players on both sides of the ball to bolster and already very strong squad. The main core of players including offensive player of the year Gemma Gow and the ever present Lara Connell form a formidable force within this Northern Conference and have made the preparations to compete at the highest level of Women’s British American Football. The off season has also proven successful for Team GB with 2 of the “She Wolves” being selected for Great Britain in their demolition of Spain, these being Rachael Moody and Georgina Day.
The coaching staff have remained the same from the Championship winning team with Steve MacDonald and Lloyd Dignan as Defensive and Offensive Coordinators respectively, Tony Kilanowski as running back coach and Greg Campbell as offensive line coach. This year however saw the departure of Mark Bramwell as Head Coach to be replaced by the vastly experience Paul Poppa. Head Coach Poppa brings with him experiences from both sides of the Atlantic, with the whole team improving with his guidance.
The first games of this years series kick off on the 25th February at Crownpoint Sports Complex, which is the home ground of the East Kilbride Pirates. At this tournament, the Wolves will be looking to make their mark on the division and take out the Wolves Scottish rivals and the ever impressive Leeds Carnegie Chargers. Kick off is at 12.15.
